Background of the POP-ART Project
The increasing number of mountaineers leads the interventions by the rescue teams rapidly growing up. The POP-ART project realizes a
prototype of an automatic and centralized system with the aim of monitoring and coordinating in real-time the rescue teams resources in
hostile environments. The major requirements have been obtained thanks to the collaboration with the Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico
Piemontese.
The consortium shows a strong background in the field of navigation algorithms and strategies as well as navigation-related applications.
The main goal is to integrate this knowledge in a Local Element architecture able to receive raw data and to compute a very precise
position employing EGNOS SIS. The overall system provides specific location-based services exploiting the existing VHF infrastructure on
secure and certified frequencies as well as the GPRS network where available.
Increasing safety and management of mountain rescue teams:
POP-ART optimizes the rescue operations through a real-time coordination of the rescuers in critical environments. Specific
location-based services will be available at the operation management level and at each terminal. POP-ART uses the available VHF
infrastructure assuring the whole coverage of the alpine area.
